But mounting evidence suggests the new administration will make a push to pass immigration reform in 2009 – despite the recession.
- Candidate Barack Obama promised it repeatedly on the campaign trail.
- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said repeatedly since Election Day that he intends to press it. And one of the first things he did when Congress reconvened this week was reserve a bill number, S.9, for the “Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009.”
- Latino voters expect it – and Democrats know they do. Both the President Elect and Sen. Reid, who is up for re-election in 2010 in the increasingly Latino state of Nevada, are eager to consolidate their party’s support among the fastest growing voting block in the country.
- One of just seven policy working groups on the Presidential Transition Team is devoted to immigration, and members are busy crafting a plan to advance the issue with voters and Congress.
And as long as there’s a possibility – any possibility – of something moving, we need to be ready.
