In 2011-12, ImmigrationWorks collaborated with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on an Independent Task Force on Immigration. Members include former Chicago mayor Richard Daley, former Iowa governor Chet Culver, former South Dakota governor Mike Rounds and array of business and civic leaders from across the Midwest. IW president Tamar Jacoby serves as project director. In August, IW collaborated with the task force to send Jacoby on a Midwest listening tour: a series of meetings with local leaders concerned about immigration in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and North Dakota. Each meeting was sponsored by IW, the Chicago Council and one or more local Midwest groups. The goals: to explore Midwestern attitudes toward immigration, mobilize support for Congress to get started on an incremental approach to immigration reform and cultivate relationships with local business leaders in states where IW is looking to increase its presence.
